Royal Enfield is an Indian motorcycle manufacturing
company and having some of the factories in Chennai, India. Originally it is a British motorcycle company, Royal Enfield and indigenous Madras
Motors is now a subsidiary of Eicher
Motors Limited, an Indian automaker company. The
company makes all the models of Royal Enfield Bullet, and also making some other single-cylinder motorcycles. It was established
in 1893, because of that Royal Enfield is among the oldest motorcycle companies
in the world.
The Indian government was
looking for a motorcycle like bullet for its police and army to patrol the
country's border. The Royal Enfield Bullet was the
one which was chosen as the most suitable bike for the job. The Indian
government ordered 800 royal enfield 350 cc model Bullets for there policemans and army man. In 1955,
the Redditch company partnered with Madras Motors in India to form 'Enfield India' to
assemble, under license, the 350 cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras (now called Chennai). The
tooling was sold to Royal Enfield in Chennai (India) so that they could
manufacture components to manufacture bullet. By 1962, all components were made
in India. The Indian Royal Enfield were using the 1960 engine (with metric
bearing sizes), Royal Enfield still makes an essentially similar bike in the
350 cc and 500 cc models, along with several different models for
different market segments.
During the year 1886,
Royal Enfield were being sold under the name of Townsend and Ecossais. This
business were suffered a huge financial collapse in the year 1891. Albert Eadie
was the sales manager of Birmingham’s Perry & Co Ltd and the company were
the pen makers first and afterwards who had begun to supply components for
cycles and Robert Walker Smith was the
engineer from D.Rudge & Co and was chosen by Townsend's bankers to run the business
and in the year 1892 a
new company was incorporated by the named of Eadie Manufacturing Company
Limited based in Snow Hill Birmingham. In the year 1907 the company was serious
losses in their newly floated Enfield Auto car business in the management of
Eadie Manufacturing and its new pedal cycle component business was absorbed
by BSA. Years later after this BSA
chairman was to tell the shareholders the acquisition had "done wonders
for the cycle department.
Eadie had won the
contracts to supply precision parts for the fire arms to the government's
long-established factory known as Royal Small
Arms which was located at Enfield, Middlesex,
now the London Borough of Enfield with
its offshoot in Sparkbrook had assumed
the new brand name as Royal Enfield.
In the year 1955,The
Enfield Cycle Company started a partnership with the Madras Motors in India for
forming Enfield of India
it was based in Chennai, and were
started assembling the 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Madras. The first ever machines was being assembled from the components
imported from England. Starting in the year 1957, Enfield of India acquired the
machines which were necessary to build components in India, and by the year
1962 all components were being made in India.
Under Indian law, Madras Motors
possessed the dominant part (more than half) of offers in the organization. In
1957 tooling gear was sold to Enfield India so they could make segments.
Enfield of India kept
delivering the "Projectile" long after the UK manufacturing plant's
chapter 11, and changed its marking to 'Regal Enfield' in 1999. The 'Imperial
Enfield' name and rights had been bought by Matt Holder of Aerco Jigs and
Tools, at the liquidation deal in 1967. The business passed on to his child,
David Holder, of the Velocette Motorcycle Company of Birmingham, UK. The Holder
family has created saves for Royal Enfield bikes consistently from 1967 through
to the present, yet did not exchange under the Royal Enfield name. While David
Holder protested the utilization of 'Imperial Enfield' by Enfield of India, a
